OVERVIEW

Now here we are going to discuss the first organ of government which is the legislature. It refers to the law-making body that makes law in the favour of citizens. Its core function is to make laws and shape society according to that. Now, let us see its function and its types in brief. Let us begin first with the function of the legislature.

FUNCTION OF LEGISLATURE

  • Legislature bodies make rules and regulations in the parliament which are made on outlining of some responsibility which is acceptable by the citizens of the state.
  • The laws which they made always address some issues which are happening in the state.
  • It also allocates resources and sets how to spend public funds for their interest.
  • It also resolves disagreements and disputes within the state and across the world, which ensures fairness in the legal system.

TYPES OF LEGISLATURE

There are mainly two types of legislature present in India. Let’s understand each of them one by one.

  1. Unicameral Legislature 

In this, there is only one legislative chamber available for performing the parliamentary functions. The single chamber performs all responsibilities from passing a budget to discussing matters of national and international importance. Most countries in the world have unicameral legislation including Norway, Sweden, New Zealand, Iran, China, and Sri Lanka.

  1. Bicameral Legislature

In this, two different chambers or houses are responsible for performing the parliamentary functions. This type of legislation is present in countries like India, Canada, Japan, Spain, Italy, and the United Kingdom. The primary goal of this legislature is that individuals from all walks of life in the country must be represented at the national level.
