Socio-religious reform movements in the Nineteenth Century: Brahmo Samaj, Arya Samaj, Vivekanand and R K Mission, Jotiba Phule’s lower caste movement, Parsi and Muslim Reform Movements

Theoretical overview

Socio-religious reform movements are the movements which aims at reforming the inhumane and superstitious practices done in the name of a particular religion. During the 19th century in India, a number of socio religious movements emerged with the aim of addressing social inequalities and advocating for religious and social reforms. Some of the notable movements during this period include the brahma samaj, Arya samaj, Vivekananda and Ramakrishna mission, Jotibha Phule’s lower caste movement, as well as Parsi and Muslim reform movements. These movements are explained below: –

Brahmo samaj – the Brahmo samaj established by Raja Ram Mohan Roy in 1828, sought to reform Hinduism and promote the ideas of monotheism, rationality and social equality. The movement denounced idol worship and emphasized the importance of education for women. It also opposed the practices such as child marriage and widow immolation, advocating for ethical and humanitarian principles based on both Hindu and Western philosophers.

Arya samaj – the Arya samaj, founded by Swami Dayanand Saraswati in 1875, aim to revive Vedic traditions and promote social reform. It rejected idol worship and sought to eliminate caste-based discrimination. The movement focused on education, women’s right and the abolition of child marriage. The Arya samaj played a significant role in the Indian nationalist movement and worked towards the promotion of Hindu identity.

Vivekananda and Ramakrishna mission – Swami Vivekananda, a disciple of Shri Ramakrishna Paramhansa, played a crucial role in revitalizing Hindu philosophy and spirituality. He emphasized the practical application of Vedanta and the unity of all religions. Vivekananda’s teaching centered on self-realization, service to humanity and the promotion of education. The Ramakrishna mission, established by Vivekananda in 1897 continues his work through various philanthropic and educational endeavors.

Jotibha Phule’s lower caste movement – Jotibha Phule, a prominent social reformer from Maharashtra, led a movement for the upliftment of lower castes and women. He strongly criticized caste-based discrimination and fought for equal rights and education for all. Phule established schools for lower castes and girls, working tirelessly towards achieving social equality and justice.

Parsi and Muslim Reform Movement – among the Parsis, reform movement arose in response to the challenges posed by colonialism and modernization. The reformers aimed to address issues such as child and modernization. The reformers aimed to address issues such as child marriage, gender inequality and education. They emphasized the importance of education, social welfare and the reinterpretation of religious texts to align with modern values.

Within the Muslim community, reform movement also emerged to address social and educational backwardness. Prominent figures like Sir Syed Ahmed Khan established institution such as Aligarh Muslim University with the goal of promoting modern education among the Muslims. Other movements, such as the Deobandi movement, focused on Islamic revivalism and reform within traditional frameworks.

These Socio-religious reform movements in the Nineteenth Century played a significant role in challenging regressive social practices, advocating for education and social equality, and fostering a sense of national consciousness. The laid the groundwork for subsequent social and political movements, contributing to the overall reform and transformation of the Indian society
