Summary of the Play Final Solutions

The play starts with a young bride whose name was Daksha but was changed to Hardika recently. She was writing her frustrations into her diary. Hardika, who was married young and now is only confined to her in-laws is frustrated due to her shattered dreams. Her love for the music of Muslim singers like Shamshad Begum and Noor Jahan causes her friendship with her Muslim neighbor, Zarine. This sets the stage for the central conflict that erupts later.

The play shifts to the present day where Hardika, who is now an older woman is waiting for her son Rahul to return home. She got to know through the news that a mob attack was started on the Muslim communities. Amidst this, Rahul arrives at the home with two Muslim boys, Amir and Hassan.

These boys were seeking refuge to save themselves from attack. But this ignites the anger of Hardika’s husband Mohanlal who is a staunch Hindu. And Hardika goes back into her traumatized past during the partition of 1947. During that time she and her family have faced several things like mob brutality, the scramble for safety, and family separations. She is also reminded of her Muslim lover Salim, from which she gets separated due to the partition events.

Hardika starts to confront her past due to the presence of the Muslim boys. She begins to sympathize with them as she has also faced the same terror in her youth. Hardika offers the boys shelter and comfort even though Mohanlal is angry with her act.

In the climax, Mohanlal tries to threaten the boys to reveal their identities to outsiders. But on the other hand, Hardika tries to protect the boys and reveal her past with Salim. This revelation causes Mohanlal to question his prejudices and biases.

The ending of the play is quite confusing as it leaves the audience with several questions in their mind. The audience wonders whether or not Hardika and Mohanlal overcome their integrated biases. Whether Rahul will develop empathy towards other communities. In an all the play suggests that small steps of understanding and compassion can try to heal past wounds.
